Kumon, Nathan, Amboys and Joel

My son Nathan goes to Kumon and takes up math. Even though he is only 7 years old (about to turn 8) and about to be in third grade at school, because of Kumon his math skills is already fifth grade level. I am so proud of him. He is a good kid...


Just like kids his age he loves playing videogames and he loves watching cartoons like SpongeBob Squarepants. Last week, my wife expressed frustration with Nathan because he was not doing his Kumon exercises as he was wasting too much time playing videogames and watching TV. We even took his Nintendo DS off his hands but he managed to sneak out at 12 midnight when we were asleep and played games on the computer.


You might be asking - what does this story about my son got to do with real estate investing? Allow me to finish the story and within the story is a lesson you can use not just for real estate investing but also in all aspects of your life.


My wife said "I've tried everything. Nothing seems to work. He does not seem to care and he does not listen to me. It's your turn to talk him into NOT playing videogames!"


My engineering mind (I am an engineer by training) started churning. The issue is him not doing his Kumon exercises. He is a smart kid. He is a good kid. How can I make him do his Kumon exercises and also stop sneaking at night to play video games? School is about to start next week and if he does not have the discipline to wake up early, he will find adjusting to school harder.


The System Is THE Solution
It was said that we Filipinos don't have discipline on the road. We cross the streets in the wrong places... if we're driving we don't care about the other vehicles on the road and if we get caught by the police for speeding or any traffic violation, we bribe our way out of it. BUT if you put the same Filipino in the USA...


All of a sudden, he crosses the street in the right places. He does not bribe the police anymore. He follows the traffic regulations.


Why is this?


The Filipino in America - the Amboy, is the same Filipino...the same person but in a better system, he performs better. The American traffic system is better - with policemen paid well enough that they don't accept bribes and they are trained well enough so they can implement the traffic rules consistently. So the System is THE Solution.


Knowing this, I decided Nathan needs a system, a structure. The system I developed is really simple. I will wake him up early - 6:30 AM...and even before he can have breakfast, he needs to finish his Kumon exercises. By waking him up early, he will be too sleepy to sneak out at midnight.


The system worked like a charm. By 7:30 AM, in just one hour he is done with his Kumon, he is also able to practice piano and he even reads a book for 15 minutes or so. He is asleep by 9 PM and never sneaked out to play games on the computer...because he does not need to do so. We allow him to play games and watch as much TV as he wanted (during this summer break) because he has finished all his obligations. He is so proud of himself. My wife is so happy. And I am so proud of this little system I developed.
